Exclusive: Axient completes The Ballroom chain

19 Maret 2020

Pure (Goshen), Albert Leong (Shure), Franky C (Goshen) and David Sabariman line up in The Ballroom

Located at the site of the very first cinema opened by the Cineplex XXI Group, the iconic Djakarta Theatre has hosted an A-list of striking corporate and private events, including select wedding parties, for 15 years. The flagship venue has something of an image to uphold in the Indonesian world of entertainment and, as such, its AV system cannot be compromised in any manner. A recent microphone upgrade now completes the Dante digital network from the Axient source to the Leo mouth.

Having recently dropped XXI from its title, The Ballroom captures the eyes and ears of its spellbound audience. While a Barco 60,000-lumen digital projection system portraying HD images onto a 16m x 9m mega screen provides the visual centrepiece, an L-R Meyer Sound Leo line array system augmented by 10 1100-LFC subwoofers faithfully enhances live and playback audio. In 2018, a Yamaha Rivage PM10 was acquired to fulfil all FOH and monitoring mixing duties.

Having assessed its current audio inventory, the Shure UR4 wireless microphone system that had served the venue’s varied mixing requirements faithfully since the outset was earmarked for an upgrade. ‘We’ve enjoyed working with the UR4 as it is totally reliable and remains fully functional, despite the shrinking wireless bandwidth,’ explained sound engineer, David Sabariman.

Following a demonstration by Shure distributor PT Goshen Swara Indonesia, Sabariman opted to invest in 12 channels of Shure Axient Digital wireless for The Ballroom – a first for the digital platform in Indonesia.

Goshen delivered three AD4Q four-channel receivers that operate with ADX2/KSM9, ADX2FD/KSM9 nickel-finished handheld transmitters and KSM9 cartridges, including the ADX1 bodypack system. Networked control, AES3 + AES67 + Dante output, together with signal routing are now available for the entire workflow. In addition, a rack-mounted SBRC serves as a recharging station for up to eight bodypacks.

‘There are many features that impressed me,’ Sabariman explained. ‘With Axient Spectrum Manager, I can scan the UHF 470–952MHz spectrum in about one minute, displaying backup frequencies. With the UR4 I had to be very attentive to changes in interference and manually change the settings but, with Axient Digital, the frequency adjusts automatically following a detection in interference.’

Axient Digital can be operated remotely via the Shure Wireless Workbench Software. Sabariman is enjoying the networked control features of the latest version 6 software directly from his PC in addition to the ShurePlus Channels iOS app. ‘Having attended a Wireless Workbench training seminar with Goshen, I can adjust the gain from the PC.’
